SBU Men's Basketball Falls in MIAA Tournament at UNK 90-74

Kearney, Neb. – The Southwest Baptist University men's basketball team saw their season end in the first round of the MIAA Tournament when they fell 90-74 on the road at Nebraska-Kearney. With the loss the Bearcats end the season with a 11-18 record on the season.
 
The Bearcats opened up the game against the Lopers with sharp shooting from outside, and three's from David Gabrovsek, Derrick Stewart, and Menas Stephens gave the Bearcats an early 9-4 lead. After UNK cut the lead down to one, Stewart connected on another three and a layup from Patrick Burke pushed SBU's lead  back to five at 14-8 with 15:52 to go in the half. The Lopers continued to stay within reach of the Bearcats, but a another three from Stewart pushed SBU's lead to a game high 8 (24-16) with 11:02 left in the first half. The Bearcats and Lopers continued to exchange baskets over the remainder of the half, as the Lopers chipped away at the SBU lead as they went into the break tied 37-37.
 
Starting off the second half UNK used a 8-2 run to take a 45-39 lead with 17:32 left in the game. After UNK pushed their lead to 11, the Bearcats responded with a three from Gabrovsek and a pair of free throws from Stewart to get to deficit down to six at 57-51 with 9:07 to go. However, the Lopers responded with strong three point shooting every time the Bearcats pulled back within striking distance. In the end Southwest Baptist fell 90-74.
 
Daymond Cowlah led the way for SBU with 14 points while Derrick Stewart added 13 and Quinton Smith chipped in 11 off of the bench. As a team, SBU shot 45.9% from the field, 42.9% from beyond the arc, and 81.8% from the free throw line.
