Box Score 2 Maryville, Mo. - The Southwest Baptist University softball team used a 7-6 game two victory after a 2-1 game one loss to split with Northwest Missouri on Friday afternoon. At the conclusion of the day, the Bearcats now stand at 8-13 (2-6 MIAA) on the season.
In game one Northwest Missouri plated runs in the first and the second inning to take an early 2-0 lead. Both teams pitching buckled down over the next three innings of play before SBU got on the scoreboard in the top of the sixth. With two outs,
Rachel Ray laid down a bunt single and was brought home on a
Caitlyn Cooner single to right center cut the deficit to 2-1. In the top of the 7th the Bearcats advanced the tying run to second, but were unable to tie the game up as they fell 2-1.
In game two Southwest Baptist jumped on the scoreboard in the first when
Brittanie Halquist singled home Ray to give SBU an early 1-0 lead. Northwest Missouri responded with three runs in the bottom half of the inning, taking a 3-1 lead, but Southwest Baptist got one run back in the third after an rbi double from Halquist as they trailed 2-1. NWMSU scored another run in the fourth before SBU re-took the lead in the top of the fifth. The Bearcats loaded the bases before
Emily Davis knocked a bases clearing double to left center to give SBU a 5-4 lead. Southwest Baptist added to their lead in the sixth with an rbi double from Halquist, followed by an rbi single from
Dana Graves, as SBU entered the final inning leading 7-4. Northwest Missouri threatened in the final frame, but Southwest Baptist came away with a 7-6 game two victory.
SBU will be back in action on Saturday, March 14 when they travel to Missouri Western. Opening pitch of the double-header is set for 1:00 p.m. from St. Joseph, Missouri.
