Box Score 2 Bolivar, Mo. - The Southwest Baptist University baseball team earned a huge double-header sweep over Central Missouri on Thursday afternoon, claiming game one 6-5 and game two 6-2. With the victories, the Bearcats improve to 6-9 (3-7 MIAA) on the season.
In the first game, the Bearcats and Mules were scoress through two innings before UCM broke the tie in the top of the third, taking a 1-0 lead. It didn't take long for SBU to respond, scoring a pair of runs in the bottom half of the inning. After
Chance Wolfe was hit by a pitch and
Christian Binger drew a one out walk,
Jake Vore doubled to right field, plating both runners, as SBU went up 2-1.
The Mules tied the game back up in the following inning before SBU tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the fourth. With one out in the inning
Trevor Bowling doubled to left field, advanced to third on a wild pitch, and came home on an infield single by
Zach Snodgrass. Snodgrass was then sacrificed over to second, and came home on a
Chance Wolfe rbi single to left field to put SBU up 4-2.
SBU tacked on another run in the fifth after
Spencer Blacksher led the inning off with a double down the left field line,
Payton Reed singled through the right side to give SBU a 5-2 lead. UCM responded in the top of the sixth with three runs, but the Bearcats answered right back in the bottom half of the inning. Snodgrass led the inning off with a bunt single, was sacrificed over to second, and came home once again on a
Chance Wolfe single to left field.
Sam Vergara came in for the seventh, striking out two of the three batters he faced, while earning the save which breaks the all-time saves record at SBU.
In game two, the Bearcats jumped ahead early against the Mules. In the bottom of the first, SBU used rbi groundouts from
Ross Wolfe and
Spencer Blacksher, after walks from
Chance Wolfe and
Christian Binger, to take a 2-0 lead. SBU struck again the bottom of the second when
Chance Wolfe singled home
Payton Reed and
Cory Canterbury, who both reached on walks, to put SBU up 4-0. Two batters later,
Christian Binger hit a two-run homerun to left field to give SBU a 6-0 lead.
Cole Roark continued his strong outing, allowing only one run through the first eight innings of the game. In the top of the ninth, UCM pushed another run across the plate and the Mules loaded the bases with no outs.
Sam Vergara entered in relief, promptly recording three straight outs without letting a run score as SBU claimed the 6-2 game two victory.
The Bearcats will return to action on Saturday, March 14 when they host Central Missouri for the final two games of the four-game series. Play is set to begin at 1:00 p.m. from Dodson Field in Bolivar.
