SBU Softball Scores 16 Runs in Wins over Barry & Florida Tech

St. Petersburg, Fla. - The Southwest Baptist University softball team had their offense in full swing in the second day of the Eckerd Tournament, sweeping the competition to move to 2-2 on the season. The Bearcats took down Barry 8-2 in their opening game of the day, followed by a 8-3 victory over Florida Tech.

The Bearcats got the scoring started in the top of the second in their victory over Barry. Stormy Christerson hit a two-run homerun to left field, bringing home Catlin Evans who reached on a one-out single, to put SBU up 2-1. Barry got one run back in the bottom half of the inning, but the Bearcats piled on four more runs in the top of the third. Raigan Ratliff led the inning off with a walk, stole second, and was brought home on double by Brittanie Halquist to give SBU a 3-1 lead. Caitlyn Cooner then blasted a two-run homerun to centerfield, followed by a solo homerun to center by Dana Graves to put SBU up 6-1. Barry came back in the bottom half of the inning with a run of their own, but the SBU offense scored two more in the top of the fifth. Graves led the inning off with a walk, and was sacrificed over to second. Christerson then singled to centerfield, to bring home Graves, and would score later in the inning on a sacrifice fly from Tyler Hernandez. In the circle, Kyra Parker threw a complete game, allowing one earned run as SBU would claim a 8-2 victory.

In the second game of the day, Florida Tech was the first one to strike by plating three runs in the top of the third inning to take a 3-0 lead on the Bearcats. SBU responded in the bottom half of the inning, putting together a three-run effort all with two outs in the inning. After two outs, Rachel Ray hit an infield single and promptly stole second before Ratliff drew a walk to place runners on first and second. Halquist then tripled to right field to score both runners as pull SBU within one at 3-2. After working a full count, Cooner singled through the left side to bring home Halquist to tie the game up at 3-3. After three scoreless innings thrown by Kacey Ayers, the Bearcats bats came alive again in the sixth. Graves and Evans led the inning off with back-to-back singles followed by an rbi single from Lyndie Routh, which plated both runners, to put SBU up 5-3. After an out, Hernandez hit an rbi double down the left field line, followed by an rbi sacrifice bunt from Ratliff to give SBU a 7-3 advantage. Halquist tacked on one more run in the inning with her rbi single through the left side to put the Bearcats up 8-3. Ayers came back out in the seventh to throw a 1-2-3 inning to pick up the complete game victory in the circle.

The Bearcats will be back in action on Sunday, February 8 for the final game of the Eckerd Tournament when they are set to take on Saint Leo. Opening pitch is set for 8:00 a.m. from St. Petersburg, Florida.
