SBU Baseball swept in DH against Washburn

Wichita, KS - The Southwest Baptist University Bearcats (3-3, 0-2 MIAA) opened up the MIAA portion of their schedule today by losing a pair of games in a double header against the Washburn Ichabods (5-0, 2-0 MIAA). Impending weather forced the games to be played at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium in Wichita.

In Game 1, the Bearcats opened up the scoring in the 3rd when Spencer Blacksher hit a 3-run homerun. Caleb Sneed led off the inning with a single to left. Trevor Bowling then tried to sacrifice him over, but Sneed was forced out at second putting Bowling on first. Christian Binger then reached first on a throwing error by the Washburn shortstop, putting runners on first and third before Blacksher blasted his 2nd homerun of the year putting the Bearcats up 3-0.

The Ichabods answered right back in the bottom of the 3rd, loading the bases with two outs before David Gauntt hit a grand slam making it 4-3 Washburn at the end of 3 innings. In the 5th Inning, Washburn's Connor Crimmins hit the Ichabod's second grand slam of the game, pushing their lead to 8-3. Washburn would add another run in the 6th on an RBI single by Parker Gibson making the score 9-3.

The Bearcats tried to rally in the 7th with two consecutive hits to lead off the inning, but were unable to score and lost by a score of 9-3.

Maustin Otterstatter (2-0) picked up the win for the Ichabods pitching 6 innings giving up 3 runs (2 ER) on 4 hits, while striking out 5.

Cory Borsh (0-2) picked up the loss for the Bearcats giving up 8 runs on 6 hits, while striking out 5.

In Game 2, the Bearcats were the first on the scoreboard again putting up 6 runs in the 1st inning. While the Bearcats only had one hit, they sent 12 batters to the plate in the inning. Washburn pitcher Mike Hefferan walked Christian Binger and Spencer Blacksher back-to-back before Payton Reed knocked an RBI single to right field plating Binger and sending Blacksher to third. Chance Wolfe then reached on a fielder's choice loading the bases for the Bearcats. After Jake Vore flied out, Ross Wolfe reached second on an error by the Washburn left fielder bringing home Reed and Blacksher to make it 3-0 Bearcats. Two consecutive walks, followed by a hit batter and another walk and the Bearcats led 6-0 after half an inning.

Washburn tacked on two runs in the bottom of the first with three consecutive hits to start the inning. SBU pitcher Michael Proiette then shut the door on the inning recording two strikeouts in the process.

In the third inning, the Ichabods scored two runs on RBI singles by Connor Crimmins and Tanner Triggs cutting the SBU lead to 6-4. Washburn would go on to score 2 runs in both the 5th and 6th innings as well, taking an 8-6 lead.

SBU fought back in the in the 7th and 8th innings putting up 5 runs between the two innings. In the 7th, Payton Reed brought home Christian Binger with an RBI groundout to cut the lead to 8-7. In the 8th inning, Caleb Sneed brought home Ross Wolfe with an RBI single to left and then Trevor Bowling followed with a 3-run homerun, his first of the year, to give SBU an 11-8 lead.

The Ichabods would answer with 2 runs of their own in the bottom of the eighth, before winning it in the 9th inning on a walk-off grand slam by David Gauntt.

Ryne Dowling (1-0) picked up the win in relief for the Ichabods striking out 2 in 1 2/3 innings.

Sam Vergara (0-1) took the loss in Game 2 for the Bearcats giving up 6 runs (5 ER) in 1 1/3 innings of relief.

The Bearcats will return to action tomorrow to play another MIAA double header against the Washburn Ichabods. Opening pitch of Game 1 is set for 12:30pm from Lawrence-Dumont Stadium in Wichita, KS.
