Box Score Bolivar, Mo. - The Southwest Baptist University men's basketball team used strong performances from their seniors on senior day to come way with a 89-66 victory over Lincoln. With the win, SBU improves to 10-14 (5-10 MIAA) on the season.
The Bearcats and Blue Tigers played a tight contest from the beginning, with both teams exchanging leads over the first ten minutes of action. After trailing 21-17 with 10:28 left in the first half, the Bearcats used a small 7-0 run off of a couple of three's from
David Gabrovsek and
Menas Stephens to regain the lead at 24-21. The Blue Tigers stayed within an arms reach of the Bearcats until the 3:18 mark in the half. The Bearcats held a 34-31 advantage before exploding with three straight three's to quickly push their lead to double-digits at 43-31 with 2:04 left in the half. SBU continued to extend their lead as they went into the break leading 49-35.
In the second half the Bearcats continued to push, extending their lead to 16 off of a
Daymond Cowlah layup to open up the half. SBU continued their strong play throughout the entire second half, pushing their lead to 20 (65-45) with 12:34 to go, and would eventually push their lead to as many as 25 (89-64) before claiming the 89-66 victory over the Blue Tigers.
Menas Stephens and
Derrick Stewart both had outstanding games for SBU on senior day. Stephens recorded his 12th double-double on the season with a team high 18 points and a team high 12 rebounds, while Stewart hit four three's en route to a 14 point performance.
Patrick Burke came off of the bench to give SBU 12 points and 7 rebounds, while
Finn Delany hit seven free throws as he chipped in 11 points. As a team SBU shot extremely well on the afternoon, shooting 58.2% from the field, 73.7% from beyond the arc, and 68.8% from the free throw line.
The Bearcats will hit the road on Wednesday, February 18 when they travel to Missouri Southern. Tip-off against the Lions is set for 7:30 p.m. from Joplin, Missouri.
