SBU Women Fall on the Road at Washburn 68-55

Topeka, Kan. - The Southwest Baptist University women's basketball team fell on the road at Washburn on Saturday evening 68-55. With the loss, the Bearcats drop to 5-4 (1-3 MIAA) on the season.

The Bearcats started strong to open up the contest, taking an early 4-2 lead of back-to-back baskets from Mackenzie Skupa. After Washburn came down and connected on a three, Ashlee Pitts came right back with a three of her own to put SBU up 7-5 with 5:56 left in the first quarter. After WU built up a small 13-9 lead with 3:23 left, Pitts connected on another three as SBU trailed 13-12. WU closed out the quarter with a pair of free throws as SBU trailed 15-12 going into the second quarter. In the second quarter Washburn started to build on their lead, going up 21-14 before a Caylee Richardson layup cut the deficit back to five at 21-16 with 6:39 left in the half. However, WU 16-4 run to close out the half as SBU trailed 37-20 at the break.

In the second half SBU came out on a 7-3 run, with shots by Skupa, Richardson, and Alex Botkin, as they trailed 40-27 with 7:34 left in the quarter. WU came back to extend their lead to 19, but SBU continued to fight, using a 9-2 run to pull SBU back within 12 at 48-36 with 3:24 left in the quarter. The teams exchanged points for the remainder of the quarter, as SBU went into the final quarter trailing 57-43 before eventually falling 68-55.

Megan Rosenbohm and Mackenzie Skupa both scored a team high 17 points for the Bearcats, with Rosenbohm pulling down a team high 7 rebounds. Ashlee Pitts also added 10 points, while as a team SBU shot 36.7% from the field, 11.1% from beyond the arc, and 81.8% from the free throw line.

The Bearcats will take a short break for finals week before returning to action on Saturday, December 19 when they host #1 Fort Hays State. Tip-off is set for 1:30 p.m. from the Meyer Sports Center in Bolivar.
