Topeka, Kan. - The Southwest Baptist University men's basketball team fell on a last second shot on the road at Washburn, 59-57. With the loss, the Bearcats drop to 6-3 (2-2 MIAA) on the season.

SBU opened the game up with a quick 5-0 lead, using two buckets from Kalehl Brown and a free throw from Marley Biyendolo. The Bearcats held a small lead for the first six minutes of the game, but the contest would prove to be a tight back-and-forth affair. After Washburn took their first lead of the game with 12:45 left in the half, a Kai Woodfall three gave SBU the lead back at 10-9. Five lead changes would happen over the next four minutes of play, and a Kalund Brown jumper with 8:00 left in the half tied the contest at 17-17. The Ichabods then took over the lead for the remainder of the half, using a 7-0 run at one point to give WU a 29-21 lead with 2:55 left in the half. However, the Bearcats closed out the half with a pair of free throws by Kalehl Brown and a jumper coupled with a pair of free throw from Biyendolo as SBU trailed 30-28 at the break.

In the second half SBU opened up with a Logan Hovey layup to tie the game up at 30-30, and a free throw from Nate Nahirny with 18:02 left in the game gave the Bearcats a 35-34 lead. Washburn re-took the lead with a 13-0 run, as SBU trailed 47-35 with 12:50 left in the game. The Bearcats slowly started to chip away at the lead, a Nahirny three brought the game back to single digits at 47-38, and an old fashioned three-point play from Damian Prgomet pulled SBU within five at 50-45 with 9:37 left in the game. WU continued to respond to every SBU basket, as the Bearcats trailed 56-50 with 3:01 to go in the game. Over the next three minutes of the contest, SBU went on a 7-1 run to set up a last second finish. Cartier Dean went 3-3 from the line, while also adding a layup, to score five of SBU's seven points. With 26 seconds left in the game, Dean drove to the lane, missed a layup, where Hovey grabbed the offense board and was fouled, forcing him to the free throw line trailing 57-55. Hovey sunk both free throws, tieing the contest at 57-57, but a last second layup from Washburn gave the Ichabods the 59-57 victory.

Logan Hovey was the leading scorer and rebounder for the Bearcats, scoring 14 points while pulling down 7 rebounds, while Cartier Dean went a perfect 9-9 from the free throw line en route to an 11 point performance. As a team SBU shot 34.9% from the field, 16.7 from beyond the arc, and 77.4% from the free throw line.

The Bearcats will return to action on Saturday, December 19 when they host Fort Hays State. Tip-off is set for 3:30 p.m. from the Meyer Sports Center in Bolivar.
