Box Score

Bolivar, Mo. - Southwest Baptist University sophomore forward Logan Hovey hit his second game winning shot of the season, connecting on a buzzer beater fade-away jumper on the baseline, as the Bearcats topped Central Baptist College 86-85. With the win, SBU improves to 3-1 on the season.

The game was a battle from the start, as each team opened up their scoring with three's, before Brian Patterson went on an 8-0 solo run to give the Bearcats an early 8-3 lead with 16:23 left in the first half. The Mustangs fought back with a 10-0 run of their own, giving them a 13-8 lead, before once again the Bearcats went on a mini 8-2 run, capped off by an Andy Campbell lay-up, to re-take the lead at 16-15. The game would remain close, with the Mustangs holding a small lead for the next seven minutes of the contest, before a three by Marley Biyendolo tied the game at 31-31 with 2:16 left in the half. A three by Logan Hovey again tied the score at 35-35 with 43 seconds left in the half, but a CBC basket as time expired gave the Mustangs a 37-35 halftime lead over the Bearcats.

In the second half CBC opened up with a 7-2 run, as SBU fell behind 44-37, but once again the Bearcats responded with a run of their own. Getting scores from Patterson, Biyendolo, Hovey, and Kai Woodfall, SBU used a 10-0 run to re-take the lead at 47-44 with 16:10 left in the game. However, back-to-back buckets from CBC gave the Mustangs the lead again before three's from Biyendolo and Nate Nahirny gave SBU their largest lead of the second half at 53-49. Five lead changes occurred over the next three minutes of action before Central Baptist started to hold on to the lead. The Bearcats responded to each CBC bucket with a big basket of their own, and a Campbell free throw with 6:37 brought the game back to a tie at 72-72. However, the Bearcats were unable to re-take the lead over the next six plus minutes, but a pair of free throws from Hovey once again tied the game at 82-82 with 1:07 to play. An old-fashioned three point play by Central Baptist gave them a 85-82 lead with 57 seconds left in regulation before the Bearcats were poised for their second buzzer beater of the year. A Nahirny jumper with 39 seconds left pulled SBU with one (85-84), and a strong defensive stand by the Bearcats led to a Hovey rebound and the Bearcats basketball with 10 seconds remaining in the contest. After a Nahirny three fell short with 3 seconds to go, CBC rebounded the ball out of bounds giving SBU one more shot with 1.4 seconds left in regulation. A fade-away jumper by Hovey on the baseline fell as time expired to give SBU an 86-85 come-from-behind win.

Logan Hovey produced his 3rd double-double of the season with a career high 29 points and a tied career high of 14 rebounds. Brian Patterson was solid down low for the Bearcats, giving SBU 20 points, while Marley Biyendolo and Nate Nahirny both had career high's with 13 and 11 points respectively. As a team, SBU shot 42.4% from the field, 54.2% from beyond the arc, and 88.5% from the free throw line.

The Bearcats will take a week long break from action before resuming play on Monday, November 30 against Williams Baptist. Tip-off is set for 7:00 p.m. from the Meyer Sports Center in Bolivar.
