Box Score Lebanon, Ill. - After a
Megan Rosenbohm steal with 3 seconds remaining,
Sarah Magana nailed a buzzer beater three from the far corner to lift the SBU Women's Basketball team to a 51-48 road victory over McKendree on Saturday afternoon. With the win, the Bearcats improve to 3-1 on the season.
Southwest Baptist opened up the game with a jumper from
Mackenzie Skupa, and a free throw from
Caylee Richardson extended the SBU lead to 3-0 early in the first quarter. After a three-pointer from
Alex Botkin, SBU held their largest lead at 6-2 with 6:54 left in the first quarter. The two Bearcat squads went back-and-forth for the remainder of the quarter, as the two teams were tied 10-10. In the second quarter, Skupa once again started the scoring off, hitting a jumper and giving SBU a 12-10 lead with 8:04 left in the quarter. McKendree took their first lead of the second quarter off of a jumper, but back-to-back layups from Richardson gave SBU a 16-13 lead with 6:16 left in the half. McKendree used a 4-0 lead to regain the lead, and MCK held a 22-19 advantage with 3:05 left in the half. The Bearcats received three's from
Ashlee Pitts and
Sarah Magana to take a 25-24 lead heading into the break.
McKendree opened up the second half with a pair of free throws, and used an 8-0 to extend their lead to 36-27 over Southwest Baptist with 3:11 left in the quarter. SBU held steady, but went into the fourth quarter trailing 42-31. SBU opened up the fourth quarter with a pair of free throws from Skupa, and a jumper from Richardson, to cut the deficit to seven (42-35) with 9:05 left in the contest. McKendree answered back with a pair of free throws, but Southwest Baptist started to chip away at the lead. Another layup from Skupa, and a pair of free throws from
Morgan Henderson cut the McKendree lead to five (44-39) with 6:01 to go. After two more MCK free throws,
Megan Rosenbohm drained a three, followed by a jumper from Magana and free throws Skupa to tie the contest up at 46-46 with 3:05 to go. The defense picked up over the final three minutes of the contest, and once again McKendree hit a pair of free throws to take a 48-46 lead. With 8 seconds left in the contest McKendree fouled
Ashlee Pitts, who hit both free throws, as SBU went on defense with 6 seconds left in a tie ballgame.
Megan Rosenbohm picked up a big steal, and after an SBU timeout,
Sarah Magana hit a three in the far corner as time expired to send SBU home with a 51-48 victory.
Mackenzie Skupa led the SBU scorers with 12 points a team high 8 rebounds, while
Caylee Richardson added 11 points and 6 boards.
Sarah Magana was also in double-figures with 10 points, 5 assists, and 5 rebounds, while
Ashlee Pitts chipped in 8 points. As a team, SBU shot 32.0% from the field, 37.5% from beyond the arc, and 81.3% from the free throw line.
The Bearcats will return home on Tuesday, November 24 when they host Missouri Baptist. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m. from the Meyer Sports Center in Bolivar.
