Box Score Photo GalleryBolivar, Mo. - Trailing by nine with just over one minute to go, the Bearcats cut the deficit down to one with only 7 seconds remaining, but the Bearcats came up just short in a 82-79 loss to #16 Drury on Tuesday evening. With the loss, SBU falls to 2-1 on the season.
The Bearcats jumped ahead early, getting on the board with a layup from
Brian Patterson followed by a three from Logan Hovedy as SBU held a 5-2 early lead. The Bearcats extended their lead to four multiple times, and held an 11-7 advantage with 14:24 left in the first half off of a layup from
Cartier Dean. After DU took a 13-11 lead, SBU had back-to-back buckets from
Theo Oghide, followed by a three from
Andy Campbell, to take a 18-13 lead with 11:12 left in the half. The Bearcats continued to hold a small lead over the Panthers, leading 24-21 with 7:40 left in the first half. SBU and DU started to exchange leads over the next five minutes of the contest, and a layup from Oghide with 2:28 left in the half gave SBU a 32-31 lead. However, Drury ended the half on a 9-0 run as SBU went into the break trailing 40-32.
In the second half DU extended their lead to 12 (46-34) two minutes into the half before SBU started to chip away at the Panther lead. Over the next four minutes SBU used a 11-2 run to pull back within three at 48-45. During the run, the Bearcats got a pair of buckets from Patterson and a three and a pair of free throws from Dean. The Bearcats and Panthers held steady for a remainder of the second half before DU pushed their lead to 10 (73-63) with 2:18 to go in the game.
Kai Woodfall came down and connected on a three on an assist from
Nate Nahirny, cutting the lead down to 7, before the Bearcats and Panthers exchanged buckets as SBU trailed 75-68 with 1:02 left in the contest. After a missed free throw from DU, Hovey hit a pair of free throws to further cut into the Panthers lead. Drury then hit one of two free throws, followed by a pair of successful free throws from Nahirny, as SBU trailed 76-72 with 33 seconds left. The fouling continued to work, as once again Drury connected on only one of two free throws, and a three from Nahirny brought SBU within two (77-75) with 25 seconds left. Once again DU hit only one of two free throws, and a layup from Dean cut the deficit to one at 78-77 with 14 seconds left. However, Drury would hit their final four free throws of the game, and a three at the buzzer wouldn't fall, as SBU came up just short in an 82-79 loss.
Logan Hovey produced his second double-double of the season by scoring a team high 19 points while pulling down a game high 13 rebounds. The Bearcats received 13 points from
Cartier Dean off of the bench, while
Brian Patterson added 12 and
Kai Woodfall 10 in the loss. As a team, SBU shot 44.1% from the field, 34.8% from beyond the arc, and 82.6% from the free throw line.
SBU will return to action on Monday, November 23 when they host Central Baptist College. Tip-off is set for 7:00 p.m. from the Meyer Sports Center in Bolivar.
