Box Score Lebanon, Ill. - The Southwest Baptist University football team fell on the road at McKendree on Saturday afternoon 38-13. With the loss, the Bearcats drop to 2-3 (1-2 GLVC) on the season.
SBU was the first team to strike in the contests between two Bearcat squads, with the defense forcing a three-and-out followed by a long 14 play 71 yard drive. Southwest Baptist used a strong mixture of rushing plays and short passes to drive the length of the field, where
Trent Edwards II found
Deantrell Prince for a 10 yard touchdown strike to put SBU up 6-0. McKendree responded on the following drive with touchdown of their own, taking a 7-6 lead, but Southwest Baptist fought right back. SBU continued to mix runs with passes, driving 70 yards, and a two yard touchdown run by
Bubba Jenkins gave SBU the lead back at 13-7.
To open up the second quarter, the Bearcats used a fake punt when
Connor Still rushed for 35 yards to keep the SBU drive alive. Southwest Baptist advanced the ball down to the McKendree 9 yard-line, but a missed field goal left the Bearcats empty handed. After five straight scoreless possessions, McKendree received excellent field position off of a blocked punt, and took a 14-13 lead which stood until halftime.
In the second half, Southwest Baptist never got the offense going as they eventually fell 38-13.
On the afternoon Trent Edwards went 22-31 for 182 yards passing and 1 touchdown. On the ground
Bubba Jenkins rushed for 86 yards and a score. Defensively
Shaun Hutchinson led SBU with 13 tackles while
Tyler Curts and
Brycen Gagnon added 10 tackles a piece.
The Bearcats will return to action on Saturday, October 10 when they travel to Truman State to take on the Bulldogs. Kickoff is set for 2:00 p.m. from Kirksville, Missouri.
