Box Score

Bolivar, Mo. - The Southwest Baptist University women's soccer team moved into sole possession of 3rd place in the MIAA standings with a 2-1 overtime victory over Missouri Southern on Thursday afternoon. After the win, the Bearcats improve to 9-8 (6-4 MIAA) on the season.

Both teams defenses were on display during the first half, with the first 42 minutes of action resulting in a combined four shots between the two teams. MSSU reeled off six shots in the final three minutes of the half, but strong play from keeper Kaitlyn Webb kept the scored tied 0-0 heading into the break.

In the second half the two defenses continued to play strong, but a goal from MSSU's Karley Thomas gave the Lions a 1-0 lead in the 62nd minute of action. From that point forward, the Bearcats outshot the Lions 11-2 as SBU looked to tie the game up. In the 88th minute of regulation Elin Hammar sent a pass into the box, pulling the MSSU keeper out, where Karla Jamison picked it up, pulled two defenders, and sent it across to Caroline Karlsson who put it in the back of the net to tie the game up at 1-1. Both teams would hold on for the final two-plus minutes of regulation as the game would go into overtime.

In the overtime period, each team only got off one shot attempt a piece, but the Bearcats made theirs count in the final minute of overtime. Karlsson got the ball in the far corner of the field of play, sent the ball into the box where the MSSU keeper challenged, but Jamison won the challenge and sent the ball into the open net to give SBU a 2-1 overtime victory.

The Bearcats are set to end their regular season on Saturday, October 31 when they host Northeastern State. Play is set for 12:00 p.m. from the SBU Soccer Field in Bolivar, with seeding for the MIAA Tournament on the line.
