Box Score Bolivar, Mo. - The Southwest Baptist University women's soccer team picked up a big 3-2 conference victory over Washburn on Saturday afternoon. With the win, SBU improves to 8-5 (5-2 MIAA) on the season.
The Bearcats were first to strike in the 9th minute of action when
Taylor Rohde sent a corner kick into the box where
Whitney Snow headed the ball into the upper right corner of the net to give SBU a 1-0 lead. SBU added another goal in the 23rd minute when
Karla Jamison sent a shot towards the goal, which deflected off of WU's keeper, and
Elin Hammar found the back of the net with the rebound to put the Bearcats up 2-0. SBU would hold the lead for the remainder of the first half, taking a 2-0 lead into the break.
In the second half Washburn fought back, scoring on a pair of goals within the first 11 minutes of the second half, to tie the contest up at 2-2. However, the Bearcats would take the lead for good with just over five minutes in regulation.
Taylor Schmidt shot the ball, which deflected off the goalie and then the bar, where
Averi Walker then headed the ball in to give the Bearcats the 3-2 victory.
SBU will be back in action on Tuesday, October 20 when they travel to Kansas City, Missouri to take on Emporia State in a neutral site make-up contest. Play is set to begin at 1:00 p.m. on the campus of UMKC.
