SBU Men's Basketball Opens up New Year at Fort Hays on Monday

Bolivar, Mo. - Southwest Baptist opens up the new year with a road contest at Fort Hays State on Monday. The Bearcats will return home for two games later this week before hitting the road again next week.

The Coaches and the All-Time Series
SBU head coach Clark Sheehy begins his first season on the SBU bench after coming to the Bearcats from John Brown University. Coach Sheehy holds a career coaching record of 182-106 across nine seasons while coaching six different All-Americans and over 20 athletes that have moved on to play professional basketball.

Mark Johnson is in his 14th year as the head coach at Fort Hays State. He is the all-time coaching wins leader in FHSU history, and boasts a career coaching record of 268-114. Johnson has led the Tigers to 6 NCAA Tournament appearances in his time at FHSU.

Fort Hays leads the all-time series against Southwest Baptist 8-7. FHSU claimed last year's meeting between the two squads 91-72 in Bolivar.

Scouting the Bearcats

The Bearcats are coming off of a 64-53 non-conference victory over William Woods and are now 6-7 (1-3 MIAA) on the season. Southwest Baptist is led in scoring by Menas Stephens who averages a double-double at 11.7 points per game and a team high 10.8 rebounds per game. Daymond Cowlah averages 11.0 points per game to go along with 2.9 assists per game, while Quinton Smith averages 8.2 points per game, Derrick Stewart averages 7.7 points per game, and Robert Shaw averages 7.4 points per game.

Scouting the Tigers
Fort Hays State is coming off of a 80-70 victory over Missouri Southern and are now 8-4 (2-2 MIAA) on the season. FHSU is led in scoring by Craig Nicholson who averages 15.8 ppg to go along with a team high 5.9 apg. Dom Samac is also in double-figures at 11.0 ppg, while Jake Stoppel pulls down a team high 6.6 rpg to go along with 8.7 ppg.
