SBU Women's Basketball Falls to #9 Pittsburg State 81-58

Bolivar, Mo. - The Southwest Baptist University women's basketball team ran into a tough matchup against #9 Pittsburg state on Saturday, falling to the Gorillas 81-58. With the loss, SBU drops to 7-12 (3-9 MIAA) on the season.

The Bearcats opened the game up with a layup from Ashlee Pitts to go up 2-0 early on the visiting Gorillas, but PSU took the lead only minutes later. After falling behind, the Bearcats continued to hang tight with the Gorillas, a three from Leann Terrill brought the game back within two (9-7) with 14:02 left in the first. PSU slowly started to build their lead, pushing the SBU deficit to double digits, as the Bearcats would go into the break trailing 35-21.

In the second half the Gorillas opened up with a 10-0 run, quickly pushing their lead to 24. The Bearcats played even with the Gorillas over the next couple of minutes, but PSU eventually expanded their lead to a game high 30 (58-28) with 12:20 to go. However, Southwest Baptist continued to battle, and a three-pointer from Sarah Magana capped off a 10-0 run to cut the lead back down to 20 (58-38) with 9:01 left to play. In the end, the Bearcats would eventually fall 81-58.

Ashlee Pitts and Leann Terrill both led the way for SBU offensively, with each player scoring 12 points and pulling down 5 rebounds. As a team, SBU shot 28.6% from the field, 26.3% from beyond the arc, and 81.0% from the free throw line.

The Bearcats will quickly return to action on Monday, February 2 when they host Harris Stowe State in the annual Play4Kay Pinkout. Tip-off is set for 7:00 p.m from the Meyer Sports Center in Bolivar.
