Box Score Bolivar, Mo. - The Southwest Baptist University women's basketball team used a strong free throw shooting night to lift them over Missouri Western 65-62 in Bolivar on Saturday afternoon. With the victory, SBU improves to 6-9 (2-6 MIAA) on the season.
The Bearcats opened the game up strong, scoring the first 8 points of the contest while going 6-6 from the free throw line. SBU and MWSU held constant for the remainder of the first half, with the SBU lead never going above nine and never dropping below three. After a solid first half, the Bearcats went into the break up 32-26.
In the second half, SBU once again was the first to score on a Leann Terill layup to give SBU a 34-26 lead. Western fought back, scoring the game's next six points to cut the SBU lead down to two at 34-32. The Bearcats immediately answered with a three from
Sarah Magana and a pair of free throws to push their lead back to seven. SBU continued to hold a marginal lead for the remainder of the second half, and held a 56-52 lead with 3:12 left in the contest. MWSU scored the next four points to tie the game up at 56-56, but that was the closest the Griffons would get to overtaking the Bearcats. SBU hit clutch free throw after clutch free throw as they held off Missouri Western 65-62.
Leann Terrill led the way for SBU tying her career high with 17 points while going 9 of 12 at the free throw line.
Megan Rosenbohm chipped in 15 points off of the bench, while
Dilonna Johnson had 8 points and
Sarah Magana and
Alex Botkin had 7 points each. As a team SBU shot 37.5% from the field, 25.0% from beyond the arc, and 83.9% from the free throw line.
SBU will be back in action on Thursday, January 22 when they host Lindenwood. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m. from the Meyer Sports Center in Bolivar.
