Elin Hammar Strikes Game Winning Goal as SBU defeats #8 Minnesota-Duluth 1-0

Box Score Warrensburg, Mo. - The Southwest Baptist University women's soccer team started their season off right with a 1-0 upset over #8 Minnesota-Duluth on Friday evening in Warrensburg. The Bearcats took down a Minnesota-Duluth team that returned nine starters off of last year's team that advanced to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament.

Both teams played a strong defensive game, limiting the shots taken by both offenses. Heading into halftime, the Bearcats and Bulldogs combined for six shots, with only two coming on goal. The stingy defensive play continued into the second half, as the game remained tied until SBU finally broke through with a goal in the 84th minute. On a breakaway, Whitney Snow fed the ball across the defense to Elin Hammar who drilled it low and right past the keeper to give SBU a 1-0.

However, the final two and a half minutes of play took nearly two hours to complete as weather rolled in, causing a lengthy lightning delay. Once the team re-took the field, the Bearcats sealed their 1-0 victory. In goal, Cheyenne Forshey picked up her first career shutout while also collecting four saves in the victory. The win marks the highest defeat of a nationally ranked team in program history.

The Bearcats will return to the field on Sunday, September 7 when they play Augustana in Warrensburg. Play is set to begin at 11:00 a.m.
