Box Score St. Joseph, Mo. - The Southwest Baptist University baseball team picked up a 6-4 victory over Missouri Western on Thursday evening. The Bearcats take game one of the best of three game series, and now stand at 29-22 on the season.
SBU got the scoring started early when
Spencer Blacksher hit his 15th homerun of the season, a shot to left field, to put the Bearcats up 1-0. Missouri Western responded with three runs in the second, and another in the third, as SBU trailed 4-1 heading into the fourth inning. Neither team put runs on the scoreboard in the fourth or the fifth before SBU started to fight back in the sixth.
Singles from Blacksher and
Jake Vore put runners on first and second when
Bo Helsel hit an rbi single to right field to cut the lead to 4-2. SBU got another run on a
Chance Wolfe fielder's choice, plating Vore, and pulling SBU within one at 4-3. After getting MWSU in order in the bottom half of the inning, the Bearcats went back to work in the seventh. With one out in the inning and a runner on first,
Landon Young doubled to left center to put runners on second and third with one out. The Griffons retired the next batter, and intentionally walked Blacksher, to bring up Vore. Vore was hit by a pitch, forcing home Tyler Hamton, and tying the game up 4-4. Helsel then hit a two-rbi single to right field to put the Bearcats up 6-4.
Cory Borsh would hold the lead by holding the Griffons scoreless over the final six innings of the game, as SBU took game one 6-4. Borsh threw a complete game, allowing two earned runs to go along with a pair of strikeouts.
The Bearcats will return to action on Friday, May 2 when they play game two of the best of three series against Missouri Western. Opening pitch is set for 6:00 p.m. from St. Joseph, Missouri.
