Box Score 2 Jefferson City, Mo. - The Southwest Baptist University baseball team re-wrote the record books on Saturday during their sweep of Lincoln University. The Bearcats claimed a 7-2 game one victory while defeating the Blue Tigers 4-3 to close out the regular season.
Spencer Blacksher broke the single season homerun record (14),
Landon Young broke the single season hits record (73), and SBU recorded the most wins, and MIAA wins, in program history as they finished the regular season 28-22 (24-15 MIAA).
In game one the Bearcats got on the scoreboard first, plating a pair of runs in the second inning.
Chance Wolfe led the inning off with a double to centerfield, was sacrificed to third, and brought home on a bunt single by
Zach Snodgrass to put SBU up 1-0.
Landon Young then doubled to left field, bringing home Wolfe, and putting the Bearcats up 2-0. SBU added another two runs in the third off of back-to-back solo homeruns from
Spencer Blacksher and
Jake Vore to take a 4-0 lead.
Lincoln responded in the bottom half of the third with a run of their own, but SBU came right back in the fourth to plate two more runs on a bases loaded two-rbi single from Blacksher. LU added another run in the bottom of the fourth, and SBU added one in the fifth, as the Bearcats took game one 7-2. On the mound
Matt Dye pitched well through a mid-game rain delay, throwing a complete game, allowing one earned run on five hits with four strikeouts.
In game two Lincoln was the first two score, plating a run in the first inning without registering a hit. After having runners on in every inning, the Bearcats finally broke through with a run in the top of the fourth on an rbi fielder's choice from
Ross Wolfe to tie the game up at 1-1. In the fifth
Tyler Hampton led the inning off with a walk, and two batters later Blacksher hit a two-out rbi double to break the tie. Vore then hit his second homerun on the day to put the Bearcats up 4-1.
SBU starter
Cole Roark held a 1-hitter through 8.0 innings of play, but the Blue Tigers were able to score a pair of runs off of him the ninth to cut the lead to 4-3.
Sam Vergara came in and recorded the final two outs, stranding the inherited baserunner on third, as he collected his 10th save of the season.
The Bearcats qualified for the MIAA Postseason Tournament, and have earned the #5 seed. SBU will travel to #4 seeded Missouri Western on Friday, May 2 to face off against the Griffons from St. Joseph, Missouri.
