4/18/2014 6:32:00 PM

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Bolivar, Mo. - The Southwest Baptist University baseball team used a strong sixth inning to claim an 8-7 come from behind victory in game two after they fell 3-2 in game one. The Bearcats now stand at 24-19 (20-14 MIAA) on the season.

In game one SBU jumped out to an early 2-0 lead after the first inning of play. With one out in the inning, Christian Binger doubled down the right field line and was brought home one batter later on an rbi single from Spencer Blacksher. A Bo Helsel walk and a Chance Wolfe singled loaded the bases for Ross Wolfe who drew a walk to give SBU a 2-0 lead.

Both pitchers threw dominant games from that point forward. Northeastern State capitalized off of three SBU errors in the fourth inning scoring three unearned runs to take a 3-2 lead. The Bearcats were unable to put any more runs on the scoreboard as they fell 3-2 in game one. Tim Collins threw an excellent game from the mound, pitching a complete game while allowing no earned runs to go along with 7 strikeouts.

In game two Northeastern State was the first to strike in the top of the second, plating one run as SBU fell behind 1-0. The Bearcats responded in the bottom half of the inning when Tyler Hampton singled home Ross Wolfe to knot the game up at 1-1. The Bearcats took the lead one inning later when Jake Vore hit a two-run homerun down the left field line to put SBU up 3-1.

Northeastern State continued to hang in the game, and would score two in the fifth and four in the sixth to take a 7-3 lead. However, the Bearcats used a strong bottom of the sixth to regain the lead. Helsel opened up the inning with an infield single, and after an SBU out, Ross Wolfe drew a walk followed by a Drew Miller single to right. Hampton then collected three more rbi on the day with a bases clearing triple down the right field line to pull SBU within one at 7-6. With the infield drawn in, Landon Young singled through the left side to tie the game up at 7-7. A Binger single and an intentional walk to Blacksher would load the bases for Vore who hit a sacrifice fly to put the Bearcats ahead for good, 8-7. Sam Vergara picked up his 5th victory out of the bullpen by pitching a scoreless 7th.

The Bearcats will close out the home portion of their regular season schedule on Saturday, April 19 when they host Northeastern State in the final game of the series. Opening pitch is set for 1:00 p.m. from Dodson Field.
