Box Score 2 Bolivar, Mo. - The Southwest Baptist University baseball team picked up a series win over Fort Hays on Saturday afternoon, earning a split against the Tigers. The Bearcats claimed a 16-15 game one victory before falling 12-5 in game two. SBU now moves to 22-18 (18-13 MIAA) on the season.
In game one the Bearcats fell behind 2-0 after a half inning of play, but wouldn't stay behind for long.
Landon Young led the game off with a single up the middle, followed by a two-run homerun to dead center by
Christian Binger to tie the game up 2-2.
Spencer Blacksher then blasted a solo homerun to left field to put the Bearcats up 3-2. Fort Hays tied the game back up in the top of the third before SBU once again went ahead in the bottom half of the inning.
In the bottom of the third the Bearcats loaded the bases when
Jake Vore doubled to centerfield to bring two Bearcats home and give SBU a 5-3 lead.
Bo Helsel then singled to centerfield to extend the lead to 6-3. Fort Hays once again responded in the next half inning, putting up four runs and giving the Tigers a 7-6 lead. SBU hit a sacrifice fly in the bottom half of the inning to once again tie the game up at 7-7.
The scoring continued in the top of the fourth when FHSU plated one more run, but once again the Bearcats responded in the bottom half of the inning. With two outs,
Ross Wolfe doubled to centerfield and was brought home by two-run homerun from
Drew Miller to give SBU a 9-8 lead. After facing the minimum in the fifth, the Bearcats added their lead in the bottom half of the inning. Vore, Helsel, and
Ross Wolfe all produced rbi singles to extend the lead to 13-8. After Hays got one back in the sixth, Blacksher blasted his second homerun of the game, a two-run shot, followed by an rbi single from
Chance Wolfe to increase the lead to 16-9. The Bearcats held off a late Tigers rally, as SBU went on to a 16-15 victory.
In game two Fort Hays jumped on top early. The Tigers scored five runs across the first three innings before SBU got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fourth.
Christian Binger led the inning off with a single to left field, and was brought home on
Spencer Blacksher's third homerun of the game to cut the lead to 5-2. The Bearcats also had rbi singles from
Landon Young,
Bo Helsel, and Binger, but would eventually fall 12-5.
The Bearcats will return to action on Thursday, April 17 when they begin a four-game series with Northeastern State. Opening pitch of the 9-inning game is set to begin at 3:00 p.m. from Dodson Field in Bolivar.
