Box Score 2 Bolivar, Mo. - The Southwest Baptist University baseball team completed a double-header sweep of Fort Hays on Friday afternoon, claiming a 14-3 game one victory followed by a 9-6 game two win. With the victories, the Bearcats move to 21-17 (17-12 MIAA) on the season.
In game one the Bearcats were the first to get on the scoreboard, plating a run in the second inning to take a 1-0 lead. The Bearcats tacked on two more runs in the third, when
Spencer Blacksher led the inning off with a double to left center. Blacksher then came home on an rbi single from
Bo Helsel, and two batters later
Ross Wolfe knocked home Helsel to put SBU up 3-0.
SBU continued to put runs on the score board in the fourth inning when
Christian Binger hit an rbi single to bring home
Landon Young and put the Bearcats up 4-0. Fort Hays responded in the next half inning, as SBU took a 4-1 lead into the bottom of the fifth.
In the bottom of the fifth the Bearcats blew the game wide open.
Bo Helsel led the inning off with a single down the left field line, and came home on a
Chance Wolfe double to left field.
Ross Wolfe then singled to right field, scoring Wolfe, followed by a bunt single by
Zach Snodgrass.
Tyler Hampton continued the string of consecutive hits with a single to right field, scoring both Wolfe and Snodgrass. Chrisitan Binger then singled to right field to score Hampton and put the Bearcats up 9-1.
Fort Hays responded with a pair of runs in the sixth inning, but the Bearcats once again scored five runs in the bottom half of the inning to increase the lead. The Bearcats loaded the bases with no outs, and then received rbi at-bats from Snodgrass, Hampton, Young, and Binger to put SBU up 14-3. SBU closed out the game strong, claiming a 14-3 victory.
Tim Collins picked up the game one victory, throwing 5.2 innings while allowing three runs, while the offense collected 23 hits in the game.
In game two the Bearcats once again jumped out a big lead early. In the bottom of the second inning the Bearcats put runners on first and second with no outs when
Chance Wolfe singled to center field to put SBU up 1-0. SBU added two more runs, one on an error by FHSU and another on an rbi groundout, before
Tyler Hampton had an rbi bunt single to put the Bearcats up 4-0. SBU added another run on an rbi groundout to take a 5-0 lead into the third inning.
Fort Hays scored a pair of runs in the third inning, and SBU got both runs back in the fourth inning off of rbi hits from Young and Binger to go up 7-2. Fort Hays cut the lead down to two at 7-5 in the seventh inning, but the bullpen buckled down and helped SBU get out of the inning still maintaining the two run lead. In the bottom of the eighth inning SBU received rbi single from Hampton and Binger to go up 9-5.
SBU would hold off any Tiger threat, as the Bearcats cruised to a 9-6 game two victory.
Cory Borsh picked up the game two victory throwing 6.1 innings.
The Bearcats will close out their four-game series with a double-header on Saturday, April 12. Opening pitch is set for 1:00 p.m. from Dodson Field in Bolivar.
