Kansas City, Mo. - The Southwest Baptist University women's basketball team fell to #7 Emporia State in semi-finals action on Saturday 90-69. The Bearcats hung tight with the Lady Hornets through the first half, but were unable to come away with the victory.
The Bearcats came out aggressive against the Lady Hornets, and hung right with the #7 ranked team in the NCAA throughout the entire first half. ESU opened the game up by hitting a pair of free throws, and SBU responded with a bucket from
Morgan Lucy to tie the game up. Emporia State held a small advantage throughout most of the first half, and SBU cut it to 1 with 10:00 left in the half, but ESU extended their lead to 7 (41-34) heading into the break.
ESU came out shooting in the second half, hitting two quick three's to go up double-digits with 19:19 to go in the game. After trailing 53-40, the Bearcats used a 9-0 run to cut the deficit to four (53-49) with 14:30 to go. After back-to-back defensive stops, the Bearcats were unable to put points on the scoreboard, and ESU went on an 18-4 run to open the gap back up. The Bearcats were unable to get the lead back to single digits, as they would fall 90-69.
Dilonna Johnson led SBU in scoring with a career high 20 points, while
Jacqui Zelenka finished off her career with 16 points and 8 rebounds. As a team SBU shot 38.3% from the field, 40.0% from beyond the arc, and 77.3% from the free throw line.
SBU ended their season by winning an three-straight elimination games, capped off by an upset over #22 Pittsburg State. The Bearcats close out their season with a 13-16 record, while advancing to the semi-finals for the first time since the 2007-08 season.
