Bearcats Hit 4 Homeruns in Split Against Lindenwood

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Bolivar, Mo. - The Southwest Baptist University baseball team split a double-header against Lindenwood on Friday afternoon. The Bearcats hit four homeruns between the two games, and are now 11-11 (9-8 MIAA) on the season.

In game one the Bearcats fell behind early, going into the bottom of the third down 5-0. In the bottom of the third Chance Wolfe got the scoring started with a solo homerun to center field to cut the deficit to four. The Lions responded with a run of their own in the fourth, but once again the Bearcats answered right back in the bottom half of the inning. With runners on first and second, Drew Miller doubled down the left field line to bring home one baserunner, followed by a two-rbi single from Chance Wolfe as SBU cut the lead to 6-4.

Lindenwood against responded in the next half inning, pushing their lead to 7-4, but the Bearcats wouldn't back down. In the bottom of the fifth inning Christian Binger led off with a walk, followed by a ground rule double from Spencer Blacksher. Jake Vore then singled home both Binger and Blacksher, cutting the lead back to one, and Bo Helsel singled home another runner two batters late to tie the game up at 7-7. SBU took the lead on a Chance Wolfe rbi fielder's choice as the Bearcats went into the six inning up 8-7. After Lindenwood loaded the bases, SBU brought in closer Sam Vergara to get the Bearcats out of the jam. Vergara struck out the first batter he face, and then forced a double-play as SBU went into the seventh still holding an 8-7 lead. Landon Young led the bottom of the sixth off with a solo homerun, and Vergara pitched a scoreless seventh to pick up his 6th save of the season. Zak Porter earned the victory by throwing 3.1 scoreless innings in relief.

In game two Lindenwood once again jumped ahead early, scoring two runs in the second. In the bottom of the third Drew Miller blasted his first homerun of the season to cut the lead in half at 2-1. Lindenwood added another two runs in the fourth before SBU battled back in the bottom half of the inning. Spencer Blacksher led the inning off with a triple, and was brought home on a Jake Vore sacrifice fly. After a Ross Wolfe single and Bo Helsel double, Drew Miller brought home another run with an rbi groundout to cut the lead back down to one. In the top of the sixth Lidenwood added another run, but a Jake Vore homerun in the bottom half of the inning brought SBU back within one at 5-4. Lindenwood would score the game's next 7 runs as SBU would fall 12-4.

SBU will return to action on Saturday, March 22 when they host Lindenwood in a double-header to close out the four-game series. Opening pitch is set for 1:00 p.m. from Dodson Field in Bolivar.
