SBU Baseball Wins 4th Straight with DH Sweep of Northwest Missouri

Maryville, Mo. - The Southwest Baptist University baseball team earned a double-header sweep of Northwest Missouri on Saturday afternoon. SBU claimed a 5-4 come-from-behind victory in game one, while winning game two 11-7 as SBU improves to 9-10 (8-7 MIAA) on the season.

In game one the Bearcats were the first to strike in the top of the second inning. Spencer Blacksher led the inning off with a double down the left field line, and was brought home two batters later on an rbi groundout from Ross Wolfe. Northwest Missouri responded in the bottom half of the inning with a run of their own, and then added another run in the third and two more in the fifth to go up 4-1. SBU wouldn't back down and used a big seventh inning to get back in the game. Ross Wolfe and Drew Miller hit back-to-back singles to have two on the begin the inning. Bo Helsel then singled down the right field line to bring home Wolfe and cut the NWMSU lead to 4-2. A fielder's choice by Chance Wolfe plated the second run of the inning, and then Wolfe came home on a Landon Young single to tie the game up at 4-4. Christian Binger gave SBU the lead for good with an rbi double to left field, as SBU took game one 5-4.

Cole Roark earned the game one victory throwing six innings, while Sam Vergara picked up his fourth save of the season with one scoreless inning.

In game two Northwest Missouri jumped out to a 2-0 lead through the first three innings of play. In the top of the fourth SBU had runners on second and third when Tyler Hampton tied the game up with a two-rbi single down the right field line. Two batters later Landon Young hit a three-run homerun to put SBU up 5-2.

The Bearcats continued to push, scoring runs in the next three innings. In the fifth inning Bo Helsel singled through the right side with runners on second and third to put SBU up 7-2. The Bearcats then loaded the bases where Young drew a two-out walk to increase the Bearcat lead. In the sixth inning Ross Wolfe had an rbi single, and Spencer Blacksher had a two-rbi double in the seventh as SBU took an 11-2 lead. The Bearcats were able to hold off Northwest Missouri in the bottom of the seventh as SBU would eventually claim an 11-7 victory. Brady Greear picked up the victory on the mound for SBU, throwing 4.2 innings while allowing two runs on four hits.

The Bearcats will return to action on Sunday, March 16 for the final game in the series against Northwest Missouri. First pitch is set for 2:00 p.m. from Maryville, Missouri.
