Bolivar, Mo. - The Southwest Baptist University softball team earned a split against Rockhurst on Saturday afternoon. The Bearcats fell in game one 5-3, but used a walk-off homerun from
Kacey Ayers to take game two 6-5.
In game one the Bearcats jumped out on top early, taking advantage of back-to-back errors by the Hawks, as
Londyn Backfisch came home on a sacrifice from
Addie Murders to give SBU a 1-0 lead. Rockhurst tied it up in the 4th, but the Bearcats re-took the lead in the bottom half of the inning. With runners on first and second, Hailey Tuner hit an rbi single to right field, putting SBU back on top, and then Taylor Golay added another run with her rbi single to put SBU up 3-1. It wasn't enough, as Rockhurst scored four runs over the next two innings as SBU fell 5-3 in game one.
In game two SBU once again jumped out to a 1-0 lead after the first inning of play. Backfisch led the inning off with a double, and came home two batters later on a
Raigan Ratliff sacrifice fly to put SBU up 1-0. Rockhurst used a big 4th inning, where they plated 5 runs, to take a 5-1 advantage. However, the Bearcats wouldn't back down. The Bearcats responded with three runs in the bottom of the fifth, one off of a
Caitlyn Cooner rbi and two more on a Golay single, to cut the lead down to one at 5-4. The Bearcats stayed within striking distance heading into the bottom of the seventh inning. With two out, and a runner on first due to an RU error,
Kacey Ayers blasted a homerun to give the Bearcats the 6-5 victory.
The Bearcats will return to action on Tuesday, March 4 when they travel to William Jewell. First pitch of the double-header against the Cardinals is set for 2:00 p.m. from Liberty, Missouri.
