SBU Softball Earns Split at Washburn to Open up MIAA Play

Topeka, Kan. - The Southwest Baptist University softball team had their bats going on Saturday, earning a split at Washburn. The Bearcats claimed a 7-4 game one victory before falling in game two 10-6. SBU now stands at 2-8 (1-1 MIAA) on the young season.

In game one the Bearcats came ready to play, striking in the first inning. Londyn Backfish led the game off with a walk, followed by an Addie Murders single. Caitlyn Cooner then blasted a three-run homerun to right field to put SBU up 3-0. The Bearcats struck again in the second inning when they loaded the bases with two outs. Cooner was then hit by a pitch, followed by a Dana Graves walk to put SBU up 5-0. Washburn got one run back in the bottom of the third before SBU once again extended their lead in the sixth. In the sixth, Cooner blasted her second homerun of the game, to put SBU up 7-1. Washburn got three runs back in the seventh, but Kacey Ayers came in to close out the game by picking up her first career save in SBU's 7-4 victory.

In game two SBU once again jumped onto the scoreboard first. In the top of the first inning, Cooner continued her strong day with a single up the middle to plate Backfisch to put SBU up 1-0. In the third, SBU added to their lead by scoring two more runs. With runners on the corners, Lyndie Routh grounded out to bring home Cooner, followed by a error which plated Graves. Washburn promptly responded in the bottom half of the inning with 4 runs to take a 4-3 lead.

However, SBU continued to battle back, re-taking the lead in the 4th inning. With runners on first and second, Cooner continued her hot hitting by doubling to plate both running as give SBU a 5-4. SBU extended their lead in the 6th inning when Jordan Gray scored on a wild pitch, but it wasn't enough as WU responded with 6 runs in the bottom half of the inning as SBU fell 10-6.

On the day Caitlyn Cooner went 5-7 with 3 runs scored and 6 rbi, while hitting two home runs and one double. Dana Graves picked up 4 hits, while Addie Murders also had 3 hits on the day.

The Bearcats will return to action on Thursday, February 27 when they host Truman State. The double-header is set to begin at 1:00 p.m. from the SBU Softball Field in Bolivar.
