Bolivar, MO –SBU completes the second half comeback in a physical matchup versus the Lindenwood Lions winning 66-61 in the final moments of the game. The Bearcats improve to 12-11 on the season and 5-9 in conference play.
It was evident from the get go that it was going to be another conference battle in the Meyer Sports Center. It was a one point game at 23-22 as Lindenwood led halfway through the first half.
Afam Obukwelu led the Bearcats with 7 points with 8:38 left in the half. The game remained tight as the Bearcats saw themselves down 4 points 29-24 with 4:08 left in the half. After a physical first half the Bearcats were down 37-32 going into the locker-room.
The second half picked right back up where the first left off in a man to man battle. As the game pressed on the Bearcats fought back and were within 2 points (46-44) with 9:57 left in the game. The runner from
Preston Guiot tied it up at 50-50 with 6:18 to play, and SBU saw its first lead of the second half as DJ Barmore hit a fade away floater to make it 52-51 with 5:13 remaining. Going into the final media timeout the stage was set for an epic finish as SBU led by 1 point with 3:40 left to play. David Garbrovsek fouled out after hitting a huge three pointer to put SBU up by 4 points with 2:00 minutes left in the matchup.
Menas Stephens hit two clutch free throws to seal the deal and complete the comeback 66-61 as time ran out.
Freshman
David Gabrovsek posted team and game high 15 points shooting 6-13 going 3-9 from three point range.
Jaywuan Hill also had a solid performance as he posted 13 points. SBU also saw support from their bench scoring 35 of their 66 points. The Bearcats shot 40.3% from the field, 20.0% from beyond the arc, and 68.8% from the free throw line.
The Bearcats are back in action Saturday February 15th as they take on Lincoln University in a conference double header for the men and women basketball teams. The SBU women are set to tip off at 1:30 p.m. and the men will follow at 3:30 p.m. central standard time.
