Box Score Kearney, Neb. - Behind the hot hand of
Brook Duncan, the Southwest Baptist University women's basketball team picked up a 81-69 victory at Nebraska-Kearney on Saturday afternoon. With the win, the Bearcats improve to 4-3 (1-1 MIAA) on the season.
The Bearcats and Lopers both came out ready to shoot the basketball. SBU quickly jumped ahead, as
Brook Duncan hit her first four shots as the Bearcats took an early 11-5 lead against the Lopers. UNK responded, using a 7-0 run to take a 12-11 lead with 16:00 minutes left in the first half. After the first media timeout, Duncan hit another three coupled with a pair of baskets from
Morgan Lucy gave SBU an 8 point lead at 22-14 with 12:41 left in the first. A jumper from Duncan with 8:59 left in the first half pushed the Bearcat lead to 11 (29-18) as SBU would hold a lead for the remainder of the first half, going into the break up 45-40.
In the second half the game remained tight for the first ten minutes of action, with the Bearcats holding a single digit lead.
Leann Terrill hit a jumper in the paint 9:23 left in the game to extend the lead back to double-digits (65-55) as the Bearcats continued to play strong basketball. The SBU lead would increase to a game high 18 off of a
Mackenzie Skupa jumper with 3:36 left in the game, as SBU cruised to a 81-69 victory.
"Really proud of our ladies effort today," head coach
Kelsey Keizer stated after the victory. "The conference grind is difficult but our team stepped up and played tough on the road.
Brook Duncan got us going offensively in the first half, and as a team we shot the ball very well which is exactly what we needed to build our confidence going into next week."
Brook Duncan led the Bearcats with a game high 25 points off of 9-15 shooting from the field, while hitting 7 three's and dishing out 6 assists.
Dilonna Johnson chipped in 13 points to go along with 6 assists, while
Morgan Lucy had 10 points off of the bench. As a team, SBU shot 50.8% from the field, 40.0% from beyond the arc, and 90.0% from the free throw line.
The Bearcats will continue their road trip on Wednesday, December 10 when they travel to Missouri S&T. Tip-off is set for 7:00 p.m. from Rolla, Missouri.
