SBU Women's Basketball Grinds Out 81-78 2OT Victory over Missouri S&T

Rolla, Mo. - The Southwest Baptist University women's basketball team picked up a big non-conference win over Missouri S&T on Wednesday evening, taking down the Lady Miners in double-overtime, 81-78. With the victory, SBU improves to 5-3 on the season.

Missouri S&T came out strong to open the game, quickly putting up a double-digit lead over the visiting Bearcats. Five minutes into the contest, Southwest Baptist trailed 13-2, and at the 10:44 mark in the first half, SBU trailed by a game high 16 (19-3). S&T held a 15 points advantage (25-10) with 7:04 left in the first half, but four straight free throws and a layup by Megan Rosenbohm brought the game back to single digits at 25-16. The Lady Miners quickly pushed the lead back to 13 with 4:07 left in the first half, but the Bearcats used an 11-2 run to cut the Missouri S&T lead down to four (31-27), and would eventually going into the break trailing 33-29.

To start the second half, SBU opened up with a 5-0 run to claim their first lead of the game at 34-33. The Bearcats and Lady Miners exchanged leads over the next couple of minutes before Missouri S&T would eventually hold a small lead for a substantial period of time. The Lady Miners extended their lead to six (51-45) with 5:28 left in the game, but Southwest Baptist would continue to hang around. A three by Ashlee Pitts with 2:17 left tied the game up at 55-55, but Missouri S&T responded by pushing their lead back to four with 1:29 to go. Over the next minute in a half, big free throws from Leann Terrill and Megan Rosenbohm tied the game back up at 59-59 forcing an overtime period.

In the first overtime, it was the Bearcats turn to hold a lead for a majority of the period. Back-to-back layups from Sarah Magana gave Southwest Baptist their largest lead of the game at 63-59 with 4:26 to go in the period, but the Miners came back to tie the contest up at 65-65 with 1:58 to go. Buckets from Morgan Lucy and Rosenbohm once again extended the lead to four, but Missouri S&T would convert one of two free throws, and hit a three to tie the game back up at 69-69 with 1:06 left in the first overtime. Neither team would score during the final minute of overtime, forcing a second overtime.

In double overtime, Missouri S&T was the one to hold a marginal lead for the first three minutes of the period. The Bearcats continued to hang in, with solid free throw shooting and timely buckets, and Magana gave SBU their first lead of the second overtime when she drained a three with 2:18 to put SBU up 78-76. The Lady Miners responded with a bucket of their own, but Rosenbohm continued her strong night with a layup with 1:31 left in the period to put SBU up 80-78. The Bearcats were able to hold off any surge from Missouri S&T as SBU came away with a hard fought 81-78 victory.

Morgan Lucy gave SBU their first double-double on the season with 11 points and a game high 10 rebounds. Megan Rosenbohm and Brook Duncan both had a team high 14 points, while Duncan also grabbed 9 boards in the victory. From the guard position, Dilonna Johnson gave SBU 12 points while Sarah Magana added 9 points off of the bench. As a team SBU shot 29.6% from the field, 32.0% from beyond the arc, and 75.8% from the free throw line. The Bearcat hit a season high 25 free throws on the evening while also forcing 20 Lady Miner turnovers.

The Bearcats will be back in action on Saturday, December 13 when they host #1 Emporia State. Tip-off is set for 1:30 from the Meyer Sports Center in Bolivar.
