Box Score Russellville, Ark. - The Southwest Baptist University men's basketball team fell on the road at Arkansas Tech on Saturday afternoon 72-59. With the loss, SBU drops to 3-4 on the season.
The Bearcats and Wonder Boys started off with a defensive battle to open up the contest in Russellville. After trailing 4-0 early in the contest, a
Derrick Stewart three gave SBU a 5-4 lead with 14:36 left in the first half. From there, ATU slowly stared to build their lead, as the Bearcats went into the break trailing 33-22.
In the second half Southwest Baptist came out of the locker run and quickly cut the deficit to four (35-31) fueled by seven points from
Daymond Cowlah. ATU responded, pushing their lead back to nine, but the Bearcats continued to hang strong with the Wonder Boys. Three pointers from Cowlah and
Robert Shaw brought SBU back within four at 46-42 with 13:27 to go in the game. However, Arkansas Tech once again used a small run to push their lead back to double-digits but SBU wouldn't back down. After trailing 61-51 with 6:41 left, SBU used a 6-0 run to cut the deficit back to four (61-57) with 5:13 to go. ATU used an 11-2 run to close out the contest as Southwest Baptist would end up falling to the Wonder Boys 72-59.
Daymond Cowlah led SBU with a career high 19 points to go along with 5 assists while
Robert Shaw added a career high 13 points.
Quinton Smith added 12 points, while
Menas Stephens pulled down a team high 10 rebounds in the loss. As a team, SBU shot 34.4% from the field, 25.0% from beyond the arc, and 83.3% from the free throw line.
Sophomore forward
Quinton Smith has been named to the All-Tournament team after averaging 12.5 points per game and 2.0 rebounds per game.
The Bearcats will be back in action on Thursday, December 4 when they travel to Washburn to open up MIAA play. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m. from Topeka, Kansas.
