Box Score Liberty, Mo. - The Southwest Baptist University women's basketball team played a tight back-and-forth contest with William Jewell on Tuesday evening in Liberty, coming away with an 86-82 victory over the Cardinals. With the win, Southwest Baptist improves to 2-2 on the season.
In a game that continually featured runs, William Jewell opened up the contest with an 8-0 run as the Bearcats struggled against a strong press of Jewell to open up the contest. However, the Bearcats responded back with a 10-2 run to cut the WJC lead to 10-8 with 13:55 left in the half. The same trend continued as the Cardinals pushed their lead back to eight, but Southwest Baptist continued to hang around and a
Lissette Plasencia layup cut the lead down to three at 26-23 with 5:52 to go in the half. Jewell responded right back, pushing their lead to seven, but the Bearcats wouldn't back down, and would eventually go into the half down 40-35.
The second half featured much of the same as the first half, as both teams continued to use mini runs to keep the game close. Jewell came out of the locker room and quickly pushed their lead to eight, and would hold a small lead for the next ten minutes of the first half. However, the Bearcats continued to hang with the Cardinals, and cut their lead down to two off of a
Megan Rosenbohm three at 62-60 with 10:12 to go. On the next Bearcat possession, Plasencia hit two big free throws to tie the game up at 62-62, but Jewell answered right back with back-to-back buckets as SBU trailed 67-62 with 9:21 to go. SBU promptly answered back, going on a 6-0 run, capped off by a Rosenbohm bucket, to take their first lead at 68-67 with 7:50 left. The Bearcats and Cardinals exchanged the lead over the next three minutes before Southwest Baptist started to build up a small lead of their own. After another Rosenbohm jumper with 1:34 left in the game, the Bearcats held an 82-77 lead. The Cardinals responded back, cutting the lead to one with 33 seconds left, but free throws from
Dilonna Johnson and
Brook Duncan secured an 86-82 SBU victory.
Megan Rosenbohm was outstanding for SBU off of the bench, scoring a team high 15 points off of 6 of 8 shooting from the field.
Morgan Lucy also gave the Bearcats strong minutes off of the bench, scoring a season high 14 points to go along with 7 rebounds, while
Dilonna Johnson added 13 points and
Brook Duncan added 10. Defensively,
Sarah Magana was active in the passing lanes, picking up six steals en route to a 6 points, 6 steal, 5 assist, and 4 rebound evening. As a team, SBU shot 51.6% from the field, 46.7% from beyond the arc, and 65.2% from the free throw line.
The Bearcats will return home on Saturday, November 29 when they host McKendree. Tip is set for 7:00 p.m. from Bolivar, Missouri.
