Springfield, Ill. - The Southwest Baptist University women's basketball team picked up their first win of the 2014-15 season with a 60-46 victory over Illinois Springfield on Saturday afternoon. With the win, SBU now stands at 1-2 on the season.

Both teams came out of the gate with a strong defensive plan, as neither team was able to get much going offensively. The Bearcats scored the first four points of the game, and help UIS scoreless for over five minutes to open up play, but Illinois-Springfield hung around in the first half. A layup from Brook Duncan with 12:07 left in the first half gave SBU a six point lead (8-2), but UIS would tie the game up at 11-11 with 7:27 left in the half. After the Prairie Stars took a 15-14 lead with 5:09 left in the first half, SBU went on a 12-0 run over the next two minutes, fueled by 8 points from Duncan, as the Bearcats would eventually go into the half up 28-18.

In the second half, the Bearcats continued to put distance between themselves and UIS. The Bearcats used a 17-4 run over the first five minutes of the second half to extend their lead to a game high 23 (45-22), and would hold at least a 15 point lead for a remainder of the game. The Bearcats would cruise to a 60-46 victory.

"It feels good to get our first win under our belts," head coach Kelsey Keizer commented. "Brook Duncan's production was key for us after a slow start offensively. Sarah Magana and Megan Rosenbohm also gave us great energy off the bench to lead us to the win."

Brook Duncan led the way for SBU, playing a strong part in both runs that opened the game up for the Bearcats. Duncan had a game high 21 points off of 9 of 15 shooting from the field. Sarah Magana also had a solid game for SBU, scoring 9 points while also pulling down a team high 6 rebounds, while Leann Terrill chipped in 8 points. As a team, SBU shot 42.9% from the field, 43.8% from beyond the arc, and 71.4% from the line.

SBU will continue their road trip on Tuesday, November 25 when they travel to William Jewell. Tip-off against the Cardinals is set for 5:30 p.m. from Liberty, Missouri.
