Mankato, Minn. - The Southwest Baptist University women's soccer team season came to a close on Friday afternoon in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. The Bearcats played Winona State to a tie through two overtimes, but fell 4-2 on penalty kicks. The Bearcats finish the season with a 16-5-1 record, tying the most wins in school history.
The Bearcats had a strong showing in the contest again Winona State, and would take a 1-0 lead when
Karla Jamison knocked in her 15th goal of the season to put the Bearcats up with less than 9 minutes to play in the contest. However, Winona State responded with a goal of their own from Alaina Kne, as SBU and WSU would head into extra time tied 1-1.
Both teams remained scoreless through both overtime period, forcing a shootout to determine who would advance to the next round of the NCAA Tournament.
Ali Skogrand and
Nicole Billmeyer both scored on their shootout attempts, but Winona State defeated the Bearcats by scoring on all four of their shootout attempts.
SBU concludes one of the most successful seasons in school history. The Bearcats recorded a tie for the most wins in school history (16), advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the second consecutive years for the first time in school history, a finished 2nd in the MIAA regular season, the highest MIAA finish in school history.
