Box Score Rensselaer, Ind. - The Southwest Baptist University football team lost a thrilling match-up at Saint Joseph's on Saturday afternoon 30-27, despite
Derwyn Lauderdale setting the GLVC single game receptions record with 17 grabs on the day. With the loss, SBU drops to 2-6 (1-6 GLVC) on the season.
Saint Joseph's kicked the game off with two strikes in the first quarter as SBU found themselves down 14-0 early in the contest. At the start of the second quarter, the Bearcats struck quickly to cut the lead in half.
Willie Tindal found
Derwyn Lauderdale and
Nathan Mourik early and often in the drive, while
Andrew Huffman was on the receiving end of a 1 yard touchdown pass, as SBU cut the deficit to 14-7 with 14:20 left in the first half. Saint Joseph's quickly responded with their third touchdown on the day, but were unable to convert on the extra point due to a blocked kick by
Nick Burns, as SBU trailed 20-7 with 9:59 left in the half.
John Colliver would cut the lead down to ten after hitting a 40 yard field goal, as SBU went into the half down 20-10.
After a couple of defensive stops to open up the second half, SBU added another touchdown to the scoreboard on a 12 yard touchdown run by
Bubba Jenkins to cut the lead to 20-16 with 6:04 left in the third quarter. On the ensuing kickoff,
Antion McBee forced a Puma fumble which resulted in a 24 yard field goal from
John Colliver to cut the lead down to one at 20-19 with 3:49 to go in the third quarter.
Saint Joseph's opened up the final quarter of play with a 27 yard touchdown pass to extend their lead back to eight at 27-19, but the Bearcats continued to fight. On the next drive, SBU went 75 yards, capped off by a 16 yard rushing touchdown by
Jaha McCray, as the Pumas lead was cut to two at 27-25. On the following two-point conversion,
Willie Tindal found
Derwyn Lauderdale in the endzone to knot the game up at 27-27 with 3:54 left in regulation. However, Saint Joseph would use their next drive to take a three point lead on a 31 yard field goal as SBU would end up falling 30-27.
Willie Tindal continued his strong season from the quarterback position, throwing for a game high 368 yards with one touchdown. In his return to the lineup,
Derwyn Lauderdale hauled in a GLVC single game record 17 receptions for 157 yards while
Nathan Mourik had 9 grabs for 124 yards. On the defensive side of the ball,
Tevin Brinson led the way for SBU with a team high 8 tackles with an interception and a fumble recovery.
Tyler Curts also added 8 tackles, while
George Sanders and
Quinlan Gaines both added 7 tackles in the loss.
SBU will return home on Saturday, November 1 when they host Truman State. Senior day is set to kickoff at 1:00 p.m. from Plaster Stadium in Bolivar.
