Box Score Quincy, Ill. - The Southwest Baptist University football team put up 500 total yards of offense, but fell in a high scoring battle at Quincy 59-34. With the loss, SBU drops to 2-4 (1-4 GLVC) on the season.
Quincy was the first to strike in the first quarter with a Chris Harris two yard touchdown run to give the Hawks a 7-0 lead with 10:25 left in the first quarter. The Bearcats responded with 8:19 left in the first quarter when
Willie Tindal found Scottie Wilson on a 10 yard touchdown strike to tie the game up at 7-7. SBU quickly got the ball back when
Antwaun Lewis picked off a QU pass, giving the ball back to the Bearcats. After a couple of three-and-outs by both teams, SBU special teams came up huge when Deantrel Prince blocked the Quincy punt to give the Bearcats the ball inside the redzone. SBU was able to tack on a 29 yard field goal by
John Colliver as the Bearcats took a 10-7 lead with 3:48 left in the first quarter.
The Bearcat defense again held strong, and the SBU offense was able to put the ball into the endzone with 1:10 left in the quarter.
Willie Tindal completed his second touchdown pass of the day, a 14 yard pass to
Kendrick Payne, after the play was set up by a 54 yard strike to Deantrel Prince.
SBU continued to pile on the points in the first half, using a 19 yard touchdown pass from
Willie Tindal to
Nathan Mourik, as the Bearcats took a 24-7 lead with 12:25 left in the first half. Quincy responded with touchdowns of their own on the next two possessions, cutting the Bearcat lead to 24-21. SBU promptly responded with a beautiful 42 yard touchdown pass to
Nathan Mourik down the far sideline to give SBU the 31-21 lead.
To start the third quarter, Quincy added another touchdown to the scoreboard, cutting the lead back to three at 31-28. After a strong kickoff return from Deantrel Prince,
John Colliver connected on his second field goal of the day, this one from 25 yards out, to push the SBU lead to 34-28. From that point forward the Bearcats were unable to get any more points on the board as they would eventually lose 59-34.
From the quarterback position,
Willie Tindal broke the GLVC single game passing record with 477 passing yards and 4 touchdowns. On the receiving end,
Nathan Mourik continued his strong season by hauling in 7 receptions for 167 yards a pair of scores, while
Kendrick Payne had 8 receptions for 122 yards and one touchdown. Defensively,
Antion McBee led SBU with 10 tackles while
Nick Burns added 9 and
Julian Shade recorded the only SBU sack.
SBU will return home on Saturday, October 18 when they host McKendree University. Kickoff is set for 1:00 p.m. from Plaster Stadium in Bolivar.
