Tahlequah, Okla. – The Southwest Baptist University women's basketball team began their two game roadtrip at Northeastern State on Thursday, as the Bearcats fell to the RiverHawks 60-47 in a strong defensive battle.
The Bearcats and the Riverhawks played a close first half, with neither team leading by more than five points during the entire half. SBU gave a strong defensive effort, holding NSU to only 25 points, going into the break down 25-21.
In the second half Northeastern State started to slowly pull away, taking a double-digit lead at the 12:29 mark in the second half (24-34). The Bearcats were able to fight their way back late into the game, cutting the RiverHawks lead to six (42-48) with 2:48 to go, but weren't able to hit shots down the stretch as NSU claimed the 60-47 victory.
Jacqui Zelenka led the way for the Bearcats with 13 points and 9 rebounds, while Leann Lansdown also put in 13 points for SBU. The Bearcats shot 22.4% from the field, 19.2% from beyond the arc, and 85.7% from the free throw line in the loss.
The Bearcats will continue their road trip on Saturday, January 11 when they travel to Central Oklahoma. Tip-off against the Bronchos is set for 1:30 p.m. from Edmond, Oklahoma.
