St. Joseph, Mo. - The Southwest Baptist University women's basketball team fell on the road to Missouri Western on Saturday afternoon 73-63. SBU guard
Dilonna Johnson tied her career high with 19 points, but the Bearcats were unable to claim the victory as they fall to 7-8 (2-6 MIAA) on the season.
Missouri Western jumped out of the gates quickly to begin the game, scoring the game's first 13 points as SBU found themselves down early. The Bearcats wouldn't give up as they slowly started to chip away at the lead, pulling within two (20-22) off of a
Mackenzie Skupa jumper with 8:13 to go in the half. Both teams continued to have back-and-forth battles as SBU went into the half down 38-32.
In the second half the Bearcats played tight for the first five minutes of the half before Missouri Western went on a short run, taking a double-digit lead with 12:42 to go in the game. The Bearcats continued to play with Missouri Western, but were unable to overcome the deficit as SBU fell 73-63.
Dilonna Johnson tied her career high with 19 points to go along with 6 assists in the loss.
Jacqui Zelenka once again barely missed a double-double, giving SBU 10 points to go along with 9 rebounds, while
Mackenzie Skupa (15 points) and
Brook Duncan (14 points) were both in double figures. As a team, SBU shot 37.7% from the field, 33.3% from beyond the arc, and 69.2% from the free throw line.
The Bearcats will continue their road trip on Wednesday, January 22 when they travel to Lindenwood University. The game against the Lions is set to tip at 5:30 p.m. from St. Charles, Missouri.
