Box Score Fayette, Iowa - The Southwest Baptist University women's soccer team picked up their first victory on the season with an impressive 2-1 victory over Upper Iowa. The Bearcats received solid play from their goalie,
Paige Hemphill, as well as an impressive overall defense performance from SBU.
The Bearcats were able to get on the scoreboard early, capitalizing off a corner kick earned in the opening minutes. After the ball was put into play,
Elin Hammar would feed
Karla Jamison for her first goal of the season, giving SBU a 1-0 lead only five minutes into the game. SBU would extend their lead only three minutes later at the 8:23 mark when
Ashley Creason kicked the ball into the back of the net from 20 yards out to put SBU up 2-0.
The lead was more than enough for SBU goal keeper
Paige Hemphill. After allowing a goal on a penalty kick, Hemphill and the rest of the Bearcat defense shut down the Upper Iowa offense. Hemphill collected 11 saves as the Bearcats would hold on to a 2-1 victory, despite the physical play that saw eight yellow cards handed out throughout the game.
SBU will return home on Tuesday, September 10 when they host the University of Mary. The game is set to begin at 4:00 p.m. from the SBU Soccer Field.
