SBU Volleyball Picks up Hard Fought Win over Cameron

Arkadelphia, Ark. - The Southwest Baptist University volleyball team closed out the Henderson State Classic on Saturday afternoon with a hard fought 3-2 victory over Cameron before falling to Texas A&M Commerce 3-0.

The Bearcats came out energized and ready to play against Cameron. After dropping the first set 25-19, the Bearcats came back to take the second set 30-28, and would go up two games to one with a 25-20 victory in the third set. Cameron would take set four 25-23 before SBU would take the match with a 15-6 fifth set victory.

Nikki Madoch led the way for the Bearcats with 16 kills and 7 blocks during the match, while McKinley Chesley and Taryn Marton both had 9 kills in the match. Lindsey Roy made her setting debut, picking up 44 assists, while Hannah Blount (18), Kaitlyn Allison (11), and McKinley Chesley (10) all picked up double-digit digs.

As a team the Bearcats had 20 blocks, while handing Cameron their first loss of the season.

The Bearcats had a quick turnaround, playing back-to-back matches on the day, as they fell to Texas A&M Commerce 3-0. Nikki Madoch once again led SBU in kills, with 8, while Lindsey Roy had 26 assists. Defensively, Hannah Blount (13), Kaitlyn Allison (12), and McKinley Chesley (11) all picked up double-digit digs for the second straight match.

"We saw some really great things this weekend," head coach Kelly Richardson stated. "We were able to focus in on what needs to improve. Once we're able to execute consistently, we're going to see some big things from this team. We're looking forward to getting back in the gym Monday and preparing for our next tournament weekend."

The Bearcats will continue their road trip on Friday, September 13 when they travel to Pueblo, Colorado for the Thunderwolves Classic. SBU is set to take on Southwest Oklahoma State (11:00 a.m.) and William Jewell College (5:00 p.m.), local time, in the opening day of the tournament.
