Bolivar, Mo. - The Southwest Baptist University volleyball team opened up their 2013 season in dominating fashion, defeating Henderson State 3-0. The Bearcats took the first set 25-10, the second 25-18, and the third set 25-8 to move to 1-0 (0-0 MIAA) on the season.
McKinley Chesley gave SBU her first career double-double, collecting 10 kills and picking up 10 digs in the victory. Taryn Marton also had 10 kills, while Jordan Nedbalek gave SBU 8 and Nikki Madoch had 6 kills for the Bearcats. Kelsey Fankhauser collected a game high 34 assists, while Taryn Marton also had 9 digs in the backcourt.
As a team, SBU had an attack percentage of .387, holding Henderson State to a negative attack percentage at -.108. The Bearcats also out-blocked the Reddies 6-2.
In the second match of the day, the Bearcats fell to Southern Arkansas 3-0. The Bearcats were able to stay with Southern Arkansas through all three sets, dropping the sets 25-23, 25-20, 25-21, but it wasn't enough. Nikki Madoch had a team high 10 kills in the contest, while Kelsey Fankhauser collected 27 assists, and Hannah Blount had 15 digs in the loss.
The Bearcats will return to action on Saturday, September 7 when they play Cameron University and Texas A&M-Commerce. The Bearcats match against Cameron is set for 1:00 p.m., followed by a 3:00 p.m. match-up against Texas A&M-Commerce.
