Pueblo, Colo. - The Southwest Baptist University volleyball team had a huge weekend at the CSU-Pueblo Tournament, picking up four victories on the weekend and moving to 6-2 overall on the season. The Bearcats started the weekend off with a 3-2 victory over Southwest Oklahoma State and 3-0 victory over William Jewell. SBU picked up two more victories on Saturday, taking down Chadron State 3-1 and CSU-Pueblo 3-1.
In the opening match against SW Oklahoma State, the Bearcats picked up a five set victory. The Bearcats had three players pick up double-digit kills, with
McKinley Chesley,
Nikki Madoch, and
Mackynzi Gibson all picking up 10 kills a piece. Chesley picked up a double-double by adding 15 digs, while
Hannah Blount had a game high 31 digs.
Kelsey Fankhauser led the way from the setting position with 30 assists. As a team, SBU hit .160 while picking up 8 blocks.
In the second match on Friday, SBU picked up a three-game sweep over William Jewell. Madoch once again had double-digit kills, picking up 10 kills, while
Jenna Isaacs had 9 and Chesley contributed 8 kills during the match. Blount continued to lead the Bearcat defense with a game high 19 digs, while Fankhauser picked up 29 assists. SBU hit .282 during the match, while picking up 9 blocks and 7 service aces.
Day two featured two more Bearcat wins, starting off with a 3-1 win over Chadron State. The Bearcats had five different players pick up at least 6 kills, while Blount had her third straight double-digit dig performance of the tournament with 10. Fankhauser continued her solid play at the setting position, picking up 26 assists. The Bearcats had a 14 blocks during the match, with
Jordan Nedbalek picking up 8 block assists and Chesley had 7.
In the final game of the tournament, SBU finished off the host school, CSU-Pueblo, 3-1. Isaacs had a great game for the Bearcats, picking up a team high 14 kills while hitting .364 on the match. The Bearcats had a solid defense game, with four different players contributing double-digit digs. Blount continued to lead the way for SBU with 24 digs, while
Taryn Marton, Fankhauser, and
Kaitlyn Allison all had 10 digs.
The Bearcats will return home on Tuesday, September 17 when they are set to host William Jewell. The Bearcats home-opener is set to begin at 7:00 p.m. from the Meyer Sports Center.
