Bolivar, Mo. - The Southwest Baptist University baseball team split a high scoring double-header against Northwest Missouri on Saturday afternoon. The Bearcats completed a thrilling come-from-behind victory in game one, taking the game 14-13, before falling 7-31 in game two.
In game one Northwest Missouri took a 2-0 lead after three innings before the Bearcats responded in the bottom of the fourth. After two outs,
Kyle Jochems and Will Swofford both were hit by a pitch before
Josh Herrick blasted his first career homerun to give SBU a 3-2 lead.
Northwest Missouri responded with six runs of their own in top of the fifth inning to take an 8-2 lead. In the bottom half of the inning the Bearcats once again put runs on the scoreboard with two outs in the inning.
Christian Binger led the inning off with a walk, and eventually came home off of an rbi double from
Spencer Blacksher.
Ross Wolfe then hit an rbi single, followed by a two-run homerun by Jochems to pull SBU with one at 7-8.
Northwest Missouri quickly responded with another four runs in the top half of the sixth inning before SBU once again fought back in the bottom half of the inning. After a Binger walk and
Bo Helsel reached by being hit by a pitch, Binger would eventually come home off of a wild pitch. After a
Drew Miller walk, Blacksher hit his second rbi-double of the day to pull SBU within three at 9-12. Wolfe once again followed up with a rbi single, plating both Miller and Blacksher to put SBU down 11-12 heading into the seventh.
Northwest Missouri once again added another run in the top half of the seventh, as Southwest Baptist went into the bottom half of the inning down 11-13. Herrick led the inning off with a single through the right side, and would come home on a game tying two-run homerun from Binger. The Bearcats would then load the bases where Wolfe would hit a walk off rbi sacrifice fly to center field to claim the 14-13 game one victory.
In game two Blacksher continued his hot hitting, hitting a homerun in the bottom of the fourth, while Miller, Blacksher, Jochems, and
Tyler Hampton all added rbi singles in the fifth. However, the seven runs weren't enough as SBU fell 7-31 in game two.
Spencer Blacksher led the offensive attack for SBU, going a combined 6-8 with four runs scored and five rbi on the day. The Bearcats had homeruns from Blacksher,
Christian Binger,
Kyle Jochems, and
Josh Herrick, while nine different players recorded hits in the games.
SBU will return to action on Tuesday, April 9 when they travel to Rolla, Missouri for a double-header against Missouri S&T. Opening pitch is set for 1:00 p.m.
