Kearney, Neb. - The Southwest Baptist University baseball team played two excellent games against Nebraska-Kearney on Friday afternoon, coming away with a 6-1 game one victory while falling 4-3 in extra innings in game two.
In game one the Bearcats were quick to jump on the scoreboard in the top of the first inning.
Landon Young led the game off with a single to right field followed by back-to-back walks from
Christian Binger and
Spencer Blacksher. Bo Hesel then drove home all three runners with a double down the right field line to put SBU up 3-0.
The three runs were plenty for SBU starter
Justin Pasichnyk. After Pasichnyk allowed a first inning run, he shut down the Lopers for the remaining six innings of the game scattering five hits over seven inning to pick up the complete game victory.
The Bearcats added another run in the top of the third inning, and two more runs in seventh inning off of a Lopers error, as SBU went on to a 6-1 game one victory.
In game two SBU once again jumped out early. The Bearcats capitolized off of a throwing error by Nebraska-Kearney as Young came home to put the Bearcats up 1-0. UNK would respond in the bottom of the fourth inning by scoring three runs to take a 3-1 lead.
SBU would put runners on the base in every inning from that point until the ninth inning when the Bearcats would finally push a couple of more runs across the plate. After the Bearcats loaded the bases with no outs, UNK forced two quick outs putting Blacksher up to the plate. Blacksher responded by singling to centerfield and tying the game at 3-3.
UNK, however, would end up scoring the winning run in the bottom of the tenth inning as SBU fell 4-3 in extra innings.
Dustin Caplette threw another complete game, pitching 9.1 innings while allowing four runs (two earned) on eight hits. The Bearcats out hit the Lopers 10-8 in game two of the double header.
Bo Helsel went 3-3 in game one with three rbi and one run scored while
Landon Young went 4-9 on the day, raising his average to .355 on the season.
The Bearcats will close out the MIAA portion of their season when they finish up their series against Nebraska-Kearney on Saturday, April 27. Opening pitch of the single nine inning game is set for 12:00 p.m.
