Bolivar, Mo. - The Southwest Baptist University softball team fell in a double header against Washburn on Thursday afternoon, dropping game one 6-2 and game two 4-2.
In game one of the double header SBU fell behind early, trailing 2-0 after the first two innings. In the bottom of the fourth the Bearcats got their first two runners on base when
Londyn Backfisch drew a walk, followed by
Lyndie Routh getting hit by a pitch. After Backfisch advanced to third on a groundout,
Caitlyn Cooner singled up the middle to cut the Lady Blues lead to 2-1. The Bearcats then loaded the bases when Mackynzi Umbarger was hit by a pitch to tie the game up at 2-2. However, the Bearcats would leave the bases loaded as Washburn was able to get out of the inning. Washburn would score the next four runs over the final three innings of the game as SBU fell 6-2.
In game two Washburn jumped out to a 4-0 lead before the Bearcats battled back in the bottom of the sixth. Backfisch led the inning off with a triple to left field, followed by an rbi single from Cooner. Two batters later
Hailey Turner hammered a double off of the left field wall to cut the lead to 4-2. However the Bearcat stranded runners on second and third and were unable to score anymore runs as they fell 4-2 in game two.
Cendyl Carter threw an excellent game two for the Bearcats allowing zero earned runs while collecting two strikeouts.
Londyn Backfisch,
Caitlyn Cooner, and
Hailey Turner all picked up two hits for SBU on the day.
SBU will hit the road on Saturday, April 27 when they travel to Missouri Southern with a matchup with the Lions. Opening pitch of the double header is set to begin at 2:00 p.m. from Joplin, Missouri.
