SBU Baseball Completes Comeback Victory over Lincoln on Wednesday

Bolivar, Mo. - The Southwest Baptist University baseball team completed an exciting comeback over Lincoln in game two of the Wednesday double-header, taking down Lincoln 7-6. The Bearcats fell to the Blue Tigers 4-9 in game one.

In game two of the double-header Lincoln jumped out to a 3-0 lead after two and a half innings before the Bearats were able to get on the scoreboard. In the bottom of the third inning after Drew Miller was hit by a pitch, Ross Wolfe blasted a double to centerfield, bringing home Miller, and pulling SBU within two at 1-3. One inning later the Bearcats put together a nice string of at bats to take their first lead of the day. Tyler Hampton led off the inning with a double down the right field line, and would come home one play later on an error by Lincoln's pitcher. Aaron Anderson then hit an rbi groundout, bringing home Landon Young, to tie the game up at 3-3. On the next batter, Drew Miller smashed a solo homerun over the leftfield wall to put the Bearcats up 4-3. Lincoln would respond, scoring three runs over the next four innings, as the Bearcats fell behind 4-6 heading into the bottom of the eighth. In the bottom of the eighth, Jarrod Robillard led the inning of with a double to right center, and would come home three batters later on a Lincoln error, cutting the deficit to one at 4-5. After a scoreless inning of relief from Jacob Sullinger, the Bearcats would use a walk, single, and a couple of Lincoln errors to come away with a 7-6 victory.

In game one Lincoln jumped out early, leading 2-0 after the first half inning, but the Bearcats responded in the bottom half of the frame. With one out, Zach Pirrello tripled to right center, and would come home on a rbi groundout from Miller to cut the Blue Tigers lead in half. Lincoln added another run in the third, but SBU responded with two runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning. After a walk and a hit batsman, Miller would single through the right side, bringing home Young. Anderson would come home a couple of batters later on a passed ball, tying the game up at 3-3. However Lincoln would score six straight runs, followed by an rbi single Josh Herrick in the bottom of the seventh, as SBU dropped game one 4-9.

Drew Miller led the way for the Bearcats on the day, giving SBU a solo homerun while knocking in three runs and scoring a couple himself. Bo Helsel collected three hits on the day, and as a team SBU had five extra base hits. Sullinger's scoreless ninth innings gave him the victory, his first on the year as he stands at 1-0.

"It was good to bounce back in game two," head coach Chris Martin stated after the games. "It's been a tough week for us. It's a long season. There are a lot of games left, and we really rely on a number of young guys. Right now we need better leadership from some of our older guys who have been through this before. We'll get back to work for what is a big weekend of games."

The Bearcats quickly return to action on Friday, March 8 when they host Northeastern State. The single, nine inning, game is set to begin at 1:00 p.m. from Dodson Field in Bolivar.
