3/6/2013 9:34:00 AM

Box Score Springfield, Mo. – The Bearcats traveled to Springfield, Missouri for the second time in as many days to take on the Missouri Western Griffons in an unusual non-conference matchup against the MIAA foe.  After losing 10 to 3 in the first game on Monday, the Bearcats again battled hard, but in the end it wasn't enough as the SBU lost 16 to 6.

The Bearcats jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning after Missouri Western walked a batter, hit a batter, and committed 3 errors.  All of the runs in the first for the Bearcats were unearned.  Missouri Western answered back with 6 runs of their own, led by Grant Fink's three-run home run and Jake Schrader's solo home run, both to right field.  Both teams combined for 10 runs and 5 errors in the 30-minute first inning.

The Bearcats quickly answered back in the top of the 2nd to tie the game at 6.  Jarod Robillard was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning.  Zach Pirrello followed with a single up the middle and Aaron Anderson moved both runners up to second and third with a sac bunt.  Ross Wolfe then hit an RBI single up the middle bringing in both runners tying the game.  In the bottom of the inning the Griffons led off with three straight singles to plate one run regaining a 7-6 lead.  After an unusual play at first base resulting in an out for the Bearcats, Dustin Caplette forced an inning ending double play.

After putting up runs in the first two innings, the Bearcats would then be held scoreless for the remainder of the game, while the Griffons would add two runs in the third, three runs in the fifth, two runs in the sixth, and two runs in the seventh to win by a run-ruled final score of 16 to 6.

The Bearcats were led in hitting by Zach Pirrello, who went 2 for 3 with two singles, and Ross Wolfe, who went 1 for 3 with 2 RBI's.  The Griffons were led in hitting by Michael Schulze and Bubba Dotson who both went 3 for 3 with 2 RBI's.  On the mound the Griffons were led by Jerad Hawkins, who went 5 2/3 scoreless innings while striking out five.

The Bearcats host Lincoln University in a pair of conference games tomorrow at Dodson Field.  First pitch is scheduled for 12:00pm.
