Kirksville, Mo. - The Southwest Baptist University women's basketball team's comeback bid against Truman State fell short in the first round of the MIAA Tournament on Tuesday evening, dropping the contest 56-65.
Both the Bearcats and Bulldogs came out of the gate playing strong defense. After the Bearcats went down 0-4 early, SBU took their first lead at 6-4 off of a
Brittney Dukes lay-up. SBU extended their lead to 10-7 before a back-and-forth battle between Truman State and Southwest Baptist began, taking the Bearcats into the half down 23-27.
In the second half both teams came out of the locker room shooting well. Truman State extended their lead to eight (23-31) before SBU was able to quickly bring it back down to three (28-31). The Bulldogs then went on a couple of runs, pushing their lead to a game high 14 (34-48), but Southwest Baptist would not back down. The Bearcats went on a 13-2 run to cut the lead to three (47-50) with 5:47 left in the game. The Bearcats were forced to foul down the stretch, and ultimately it wasn't enough as SBU dropped the contest 56-65.
Jacqui Zelenka led the way for the Bearcats, and concluded her impressive season with another double-double, giving SBU 16 points and 13 rebounds.
Chasity Prince played her final game in a Bearcat uniform, giving SBU 13 points, while
Brittney Dukes added 12 points in her final game for SBU. As a team, SBU shot 40.0% from the field, 20.0% from beyond the arc, and 71.4% from the free throw line.
The Bearcats finished out the season 11-16 (6-12 MIAA), and reached the MIAA Postseason Tournament for the first time in three years.
