St. Joseph, Mo. - The Southwest Baptist University men's basketball team lost the final regular season game against Missouri Western 58-72 on Saturday afternoon.
The Bearcats quickly jumped out on top of the Griffons with a
Damion Hooks layup from
Rashaad Brown-Peterson, but the Bearcats lead wouldn't hold. The Griffons slowly built their lead to double-digits, as SBU went into the half down 19-33.
In the second half Missouri Western pushed their lead to a game high 17 before the Bearcats started to fight back. After going down 22-39 with 17:50 left in the contest, SBU slowly chipped away at the lead, bringing the deficit to five at 42-47 with 8:05 left in the game. Missouri Western once again pushed the lead back to double-digits before the Bearcats cut the lead back to six (53-59) with 4:35 to go. The Bearcats weren't able to regain the lead, as they fell 58-72.
Jaywuan Hill led the way for SBU with 16 points and 9 rebounds off of 7 of 11 shooting from the field.
Damion Hooks added 15 points while Preston guiot had 12 points, 4 assists, and 4 rebounds. As a team SBU shot 34.5% from the field, 15.4% from beyond the arc, and 66.7% from the free throw line.
The Bearcats quickly return to action on Monday, March 4 for the first round of the MIAA Tournament. The Bearcats have earned the 11th seed and will travel to Edmond, Oklahoma to take on the 6th seeded Bronchos of Central Oklahoma. Tip-off is set for 7:00 p.m.
